Three ‘Living Treasures’ honored by Human Services on September 25
Annual event celebrated volunteer service and supported The Woodbridge Center
The Woodbridge Human Services Department hosted the 7th annual Living Treasure event on Thursday, September 25 with a ceremony held at The Woodbridge Center. The celebration honored residents who have generously volunteered their time and talents over many years, while raising funds to support Center programs. The evening included a silent auction, a program, and catered dinner.

The program began with a welcome from Jeanette Glicksman, Director of Human Services, and included remarks from First Selectman Mica Cardozo. State Senator James Maroney presented state citations to the honorees, and Center Director Kristy Moriarty offered a brief update on The Center’s activities. The Living Treasure awards themselves were presented by Cathy Austin, chair of the Human Services Commission.
A commemorative program booklet offered an opportunity for community members and organizations to extend congratulations to this year’s honorees, and many local groups participated, underscoring the wide appreciation for the contributions of the Living Treasures.
This year’s honorees were:
- Stephanie Ciarleglio, the recently retired Town Clerk, recognized for more than three decades of service to town government and community organizations, including her leadership with the West River Watershed Coalition, Eastside Burying Ground Association, and continuing service on the Board of Fire Commissioners.
- Richard Forselius, a lifelong resident active in youth sports, scouting, and town organizations. He has served on the Board of the Woodbridge Park Association for over 25 years, including multiple terms as president, and continues to be a strong supporter of community activities.
- Barbara Hagan Smith, honored for her contributions to the Amity and Woodbridge Historical Society, the Conservation Commission, and the Woodbridge Garden Club. An archivist, she has worked to preserve the town’s history while also supporting environmental and educational initiatives.

The event also included a remembrance of Bob Garofalo, who was described as an individual who “will always be treasured.” His contributions as a volunteer, especially in efforts to engage local merchants in support of The Woodbridge Center, were noted with gratitude.
The annual Living Treasure awards ceremony was created to highlight the spirit of volunteerism that strengthens the community of Woodbridge. Proceeds benefited The Woodbridge Center, which offers a robust array of activities and programs to foster connections, promote health and wellness, and support the needs of residents over 55 years of age. Year-round offerings include educational programs, exercise classes, intergenerational activities, entertainment, medical and social services, transportation, and more.
The evening was made possible through the efforts of the Living Treasure Committee, a host of community volunteers, and the generous support of local businesses and organizations. At the event special thanks were also given to the Human Services Commission and the Town’s Building Maintenance Department for year-long support.
