Second Sunday Workday: Improving Trails at the FitzGerald Tract
Building low boardwalks (called puncheons) to help hikers cross wet areas
On August 10th, volunteers with the Woodbridge Trails Committee gathered for their monthly Second Sunday workday, focusing this time on the section of the FitzGerald Track’s blue trail between Beecher Road and the FitzGerald parking area.
Armed with tools, work gloves, and plenty of community spirit, the group built puncheons — low boardwalks that help hikers cross wet or muddy areas — and trimmed back vegetation to keep the trail clear and inviting. The project not only improves accessibility for all who use the trail, but also protects the surrounding environment from erosion and damage.
The Second Sunday tradition is one of the best ways to get involved with caring for Woodbridge’s trail system. Each month, volunteers tackle projects ranging from boardwalk building to trail blazing and brush clearing. No special skills are needed — just a willingness to lend a hand.
