Civic Spirit Fills the Room at LWVA Candidate Event

More than 150 residents from across Bethany, Orange, and Woodbridge turned out Thursday evening, October 16, 2025, for the League of Women Voters of Amity’s Meet the Candidates event in the Amity Regional High School cafeteria.

Hosted in partnership with Amity’s Critical Issues classes, the program opened with welcoming remarks by League representative Chris Lovejoy, who spoke about the League’s nonpartisan mission and encouraged participants to “model civility, listen with curiosity, and engage in constructive dialogue.”

During the first hour, First Selectman candidates from each town were introduced and invited to make brief remarks from the podium, highlighting their priorities and introducing their running mates. Before transitioning to the informal meet-and-greet portion of the evening, the League reminded attendees to visit Vote411.org for voter registration and polling information, as well as candidate responses to questions posed by the League.

In the second half of the program, attendees circulated among tables around the room to speak directly with candidates, collect campaign materials, and engage in one-on-one conversations. A large contingent of high school students took part in the discussions, many taking notes for assignments that may earn them extra credit towards their classwork.

The event concluded with thanks to all who participated in what organizers described as an opportunity to demonstrate how respectful conversation strengthens democracy. See the photo gallery, below.
